I think you make a good point about teaching ...Yes. I think you make a good point about teaching how to evaluate and choose from the tools themselves, rather than teaching the mechanics of tools. Frankly though I think most reference librarians are still tied to teaching the mechanics, very few have moved beyond it. Those of us who resist teaching the tools are more focussed on critical thinking - around sources and indeed around tool selection. And and in fact this is not new, but even ye olde ACRL IL standards list it as a core performance indicator:<br /><br />The information literate student selects the most appropriate investigative methods or information retrieval systems for accessing the needed information.<br /><br />and more specifically...<br /><br />3.
